About The Big Read Program

Jump Street’s AND – A New Diversion, has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to participate in a national program called The Big Read. The Big Read will promote the reading of literature in the community, specifically focusing on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Lee’s novel deals with heavy issues such as tolerance. To that end, students in Central Pennsylvania will create new artwork based upon the theme, showing the relevance the novel still has today. Bridging the divide between the “East” and “West” Shores, high school students will create new artwork, such as creative writing and poetry, visual art and illustrations, film and music, to show the relevance Mockingbird still has today.

The finished artwork will get published in Jump Street ’s AND Magazine, a regionally-distributed, teen-produced publication with a focus on the arts and healthy lifestyles. The artwork will also be on display throughout the Dauphin County Library System.

If you would like to get involved in The Big Read, please contact Brandon Gryde at
bgryde@jumpstreet.org.
