Jump Street’s AND – A New Diversion, has received funding from the National Endowment fo
r the Arts to participate in a national program called The Big Read. The Big Read will promote the reading of literature in the community, specifically focusing on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Lee’s novel deals with heavy issues such as tolerance. To that end, students in Central Pennsylvania will create new artwork based upon the theme, showing the relevance the novel still has today. Bridging the divide between the “East” and “West” Shores, high school students will create new artwork, such as creative writing and poetry, visual art and illustrations, film and music, to show the relevance Mockingbird still has today.
The finished artwork will get published in Jump Street ’s AND Magazine, a regionally-distributed, teen-produced publication with a focus on the arts and healthy lifestyles. The artwork will also be on display throughout the Dauphin County Library System.

The Big Read launch will feature local legislators, great, food, and community partners, including the Dauphin County Library System, Capital Area School for the Arts, Harrisburg School District , and more. Shashaawn Dial, afternoon radio host on 1400 The Touch will read an excerpt of the novel. There will be great food at this launch; event is open to the public.
This event is part of The Big Read,
an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts
in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.

Hershey Theatre’s 2007-2008 classic film series kicks off its season with a screening of the 1962 classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. The drama, based upon the novel by Harper Lee and directed by Robert Mulligan, stars Gregory Peck, Robert Duvall, John Negna, Frank Overton, Ruth White, Brock Peters, and Alice Ghostley.
